MAPUTO: Bernardino Rafael, the country’s police general commander, reported that 33 people were killed and 15 others were injured in a violent riot at a jail in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique.
According to Rafael, 150 of the 1,534 inmates who escaped from the prison during the event have since been apprehended.
Increased civil unrest in Mozambique is being linked to the contested election in October that prolonged the tenure of the long-ruling Frelimo party. The vote was allegedly rigged, according to opposition groups and their supporters.
The incident was sparked inside the prison and had nothing to do with protesters outside, Justice Minister Helena Kida told local private channel Miramar TV, while Rafael blamed the riot on protests outside the prison.
