A California drive-through customer was burned when hot tea spilled on his lap, and Starbucks was forced to compensate him $50 million.
Michael Garcia’s attorneys claimed that the waitress who brought him three large drinks in February 2020 improperly pushed one of them into the cardboard cupholder.
The drink overturned as he picked up the tray, “causing third-degree burns to his groin, and inner thighs,” according to a statement from Trial Lawyers for Justice.
“After a hospitalisation and multiple skin grafts, Michael has lived for five years with the disfigurement, pain, dysfunction, and psychological harm caused by the burns.”
The company, which focuses on no-win-no-fee lawsuits, claimed that Starbucks had disclaimed liability for Garcia’s pain.
