ISLAMABAD As the country fights the disease that cripples youngsters, officials reported Tuesday that Pakistan’s poliovirus count increased to 50 for the current year.
A 20-month-old girl from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tank district is the most recent victim of the illness, which has claimed 11 lives so far in 2024, according to health officials.
“The district of Tank is heavily impacted by the poliovirus. Two polio cases have been reported there, and multiple environmental samples have also been found,” they continued.
With 24 cases so far, Balochistan leads the pack, followed by Sindh with 13 and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 11. Punjab and Islamabad have each reported one case.
One of the two remaining nations in the world where the wild poliovirus is still spreading is Pakistan.
