“Very concerned” about the impact on minority groups of parent company Meta’s decision to no longer use fact-checkers is the co-chair of the independent committee that evaluates content on Facebook and Instagram.
Meta’s oversight board member Helle Thorning-Schmidt told the news that she was happy with the changes, which will allow users to judge posts’ correctness using “community notes” in the vein of X.
She did, however, say that there were “huge problems” with the announcement, citing the possible effects on the LGBTQ+ community as well as gender and trans rights, while speaking on news Radio 4’s Today program.
“We are seeing many instances where hate speech can lead to real-life harm, so we will be watching that space very carefully,” she stated.
