As part of the government’s larger attempts to strengthen immigration regulations, the French Senate on Thursday adopted a bill that would forbid unauthorized immigrants from getting married in France.
The left, which has blasted the planned law as unlawful, has fiercely opposed it.
On first reading, the upper house of the French parliament passed the measure supported by immigration hardliners Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau and Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin, with 227 votes in favor and 110 against.
The lower house of the National Assembly must now approve the bill.
In a move that reflects the rightward turn in French politics after last summer’s legislative elections that left the country with a hung government, French authorities are attempting to tighten border controls and immigration restrictions.
