Growing up on the Dutch island of Terschelling, Marije Nicklin explains, “I think I’m basically an addict.” The Dutch expat, who has been in West Yorkshire, UK, since 2002, is completely devoted to hagelslag and meticulously limits the amount of packets her parents send her and the amount of bags she returns with on the ferry. When she says, “I’ve got quite a lot in storage,” “I do start to twitch when I see the end is coming.”
“Hailstorm” is the literal translation of hagelslag, which are a few millimeters long and resemble crunchy, oblong sugar threads. Most often, they have a chocolate flavor and are covered in a glossy glaze.
