Amid controversy surrounding one of its fellows, Elon Musk, members of the UK’s Royal Society have called on the prestigious scientific academy to “step up its efforts to advocate for science and scientists.”
The controversial billionaire’s actions have been deemed a “threat to science” by numerous scientists over the past nine months.
However, it has sparked a contentious political dispute among the oldest scientific academy in the world.
An increasing number of fellows have said that Mr. Musk’s actions are “incompatible” with the society’s own rule of conduct, which is the main basis for the effort to cancel his membership.
In his senior position at President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (or Doge), Mr. Musk has presided over historically large budget cuts to scientific research in the United States.
