Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is scheduled to appear before the International Criminal Court (ICC) on allegations of crimes against humanity related to his lethal “war on drugs” after his plane landed in the Netherlands.
After being detained at the Manila airport on Tuesday, Duterte boarded a charter plane that took him via Dubai to The Hague, the location of the ICC, within hours.
Potentially, the 79-year-old will be the first former Asian head of state to stand trial at the ICC.
From 2016 until 2022, Duterte led the Philippines and oversaw a bloody “war on drugs” that resulted in the execution of thousands of minor drug users, dealers, and others without a conviction. He refused his extradition.
