On the Baltic Sea coast, Europe is developing the massive Fehmarnbelt underwater tunnel project, which will transform European transportation.
News reports that this project will link Denmark and Germany by constructing two electrified rail lines and a two-lane roadway under one of the world’s busiest maritime channels.
Although the Fehmarnbelt is just 18 kilometers long, it is on track to become the world’s longest road and rail tunnel and the longest “immersed” tunnel. This is in contrast to the Channel Tunnel, which is 50 kilometers long and connects Britain and France.
The Fehmarnbelt will use prefabricated concrete pieces that are lowered into an undersea trench, connected, and buried, in contrast to conventional tunnels that are dug through solid ground.
