Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) are becoming increasingly common on and off the highways throughout the world.
This is in spite of the United Nations’ predictions that, given the severity of the climate catastrophe and the growing expense of living, there will inevitably be a shift towards smaller and greener cars.
That change hasn’t happened: SUVs, including gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and electric models, accounted for 54% of all automobile sales worldwide in 2024. According to GlobalData, this represents a five percentage point increase from the previous year and a three percentage point increase from 2023.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), 95% of SUVs now on the road, including both new and older models, utilize fossil fuels.
