Authorities imposed an extended curfew on portions of Nagpur, India, on Tuesday after riots involving a Hindu group demanding the evacuation of the tomb of Aurangzeb, a 17th-century Mughal monarch, injured over a dozen police personnel.
According to a police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity, Monday’s violence in the central Indian city damaged numerous vehicles and injured a number of individuals, including at least 15 police officers, one of whom was seriously injured.
In a video message, Devendra Fadnavis, the chief minister of Maharashtra, the western state in which the city is situated, denounced the violence and urged all efforts to uphold law and order.
“I have told the police commissioner to take whatever strict steps necessary.”
