The animal, affectionately called Mr. Blobby, is the official mascot of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society and measures around 12 inches (30 cm) in length.
The blobfish’s skin is loose and flabby, and its head is bulbous. It inhabits the deep sea, primarily off the southeast coast of New Zealand, Tasmania, and the Australian continent.
According to Sky News, the fish received nearly 1,300 votes out of 5,500 in the annual survey sponsored by the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust.
By almost 300 votes, the animal defeated a late surge in favor to surpass another deep-sea resident, the endangered orange roughy.
