In a case involving her 1994 Christmas classic, All I Want for Christmas is You, Mariah Carey was found not guilty of copyright infringement.
A US judge dismissed the claims made by songwriter Adam Stone, who put out a song of the same name in 1989, in a decision on Wednesday. He said that Carey was taking advantage of his “popularity” and “style”.
Mr. Stone, who goes by Vince Vance, was requesting damages of at least $20 million (£16 million).
However, according to expert opinion cited by Judge Mónica Ramírez Almadani in her decision, the two songs only have “Christmas song clichés” in common with a number of previous blockbusters.
