Pakistan celebrated the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s ruling on the broad interpretation of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) on Monday.
The award reflects the designed criteria for the new run-of-river hydroelectric projects that India would build on the western rivers, Chenab, Jhelum, and Indus, according to a statement from the Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan.
The award was made public on the court’s website today after being announced on August 8.
The spokesperson went on to say that the court’s important decision was that India will “let flow” the waters of the western rivers for Pakistan’s unfettered use.
