“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me,” Murphy stated in a statement following Netflix’s confirmation of his comeback as the gangster.
To break the news, the streaming service released a picture of a large screenplay called A Peaky Blinders Film.
It is a continuation of the Steven Knight-created series, which aired for six seasons between 2013 and 2022. Tom Harper will direct the first season.
“This is one for the fans,” Murphy said, adding that it was “very gratifying to be recollaborating” with Knight and Harper on the movie.
In addition, the Irish actor will co-produce the movie.
The infamous Shelby family, a gang that rose to prominence in the “lawless streets” of Birmingham following World War I, was the subject of the original television series.
According to Knight, the film’s production is scheduled to start in Birmingham in September. The plot of the movie follows the family as they become involved in the Second World War.
Murphy’s portrayal of Shelby elevated his fame even further following his roles in movies such as 28 Days Later, Inception, and The Dark Knight Batman series.
Later this year, he won numerous accolades for his leading performance in Oppenheimer, which was published in 2023.
For his performance as physicist J Robert Oppenheimer in Sir Christopher Nolan’s biography, he won a Screen Actors Guild award, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA in addition to his Oscar.
