Following the arrest of Rishi Sunak’s close protection officer last week for allegedly placing bets on an election scheduled for July, the force revealed that it had received information on the officers from the Gambling Commission.
The matter has thrown the Conservatives’ election campaign into disarray, and the watchdog is now looking into two Tory candidates and two party executives.
A representative for the Met Police stated: “We have previously confirmed that an officer was arrested on Monday, June 17, for misconduct in public office concerning wagers made regarding the general election’s timetable.
The person is on limited duty. They are police constables from the Royalty and Specialist Protection Command.
“At this time, there is just one officer that is being looked at criminally.
“However, the Gambling Commission has informed us of five more officials who allegedly made wagers regarding the election’s schedule.
The Central West Basic Command Unit, the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command, and the Royalty and Specialist Command serve as the bases for the officers. They are all not employed in close protection roles.
