The overwhelming opinion of Tory MPs, according to newly appointed 1922 Committee chairman Bob Blackman, was to “don’t rush the contest,” as he informed party board members.
The leaders of the volunteer party had hoped that a successor to Mr. Sunak would be chosen in time for the Tory conference in Birmingham, which begins on September 29.
However, after a lengthy 1922 Committee meeting in the Commons on Wednesday night, Mr. Blackman informed the board that MPs support hustings at the conference, when up to four candidates may run.
Following the board meeting, a statement on the contest’s schedule and rules had been anticipated.
“The options for the leadership process presented by the 1922 executive committee were well-discussed by the party board during their meeting today,” a spokesperson for the party told News afterward.
Next Monday, the 1922 executive committee will reconvene and make an announcement regarding the leadership process.
