As the deputy chief of staff to Governor Kathy Hochul and the deputy diversity officer to previous Governor Andrew Cuomo, Linda Sun held a number of positions in the New York state government.
In exchange for millions of money, Sun is accused of quietly advancing Beijing’s agenda through her positions and influence.
Prosecutors claim that among other things, Sun obstructed Taiwanese government representatives’ access to the governor’s office at the behest of Chinese officials and manipulated New York government messaging to suit China’s interests.
According to the accusation, her husband Hu received assistance for his business ventures in China in exchange for her labor.
Prosecutors claim that this took the form of a financial windfall that enabled the couple to purchase their multimillion-dollar home, a second property in Hawaii valued at $1.9 million (£1.45 million), and high-end vehicles, such as a 2024 Ferrari.
United States attorney Breon Peace stated, “As alleged, the defendant and her husband actually worked to further the interests of the Chinese government and the CCP (Communist Party of China), while appearing to serve the people of New York as deputy chief of staff within the New York State Executive Chamber.”
Millions of dollars were gained by the defendant’s family through the illegal plan.
