In six innings, Skubal did not allow an earned run and struck out six batters, helping the Tigers defeat the Houston Astros 3-1.
The Tigers had not won a postseason game since they prevailed in Game 4 of the 2013 AL championship series. Detroit qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2014.
For the eighth consecutive year, which is a team record, the Astros are in the playoffs. Before losing on Tuesday, Houston had an MLB record ten wins.
Additionally, it was the Astros’ 98th postseason encounter since 2017.
Yainer Diaz’s RBI single put Houston ahead 3-0 going into the ninth, and Jason Heyward’s game-ending line out against Beau Brieske left the bases loaded.
