ISLAMABAD: After the 26th Constitutional Amendment was approved by the National Assembly on Sunday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif proclaimed it to be a historic day for Pakistan.
With 225 members, including members of the coalition and independents, voting in favor of the bill, he declared, “Today, it’s been decided that parliament reigns supreme.”
A parliamentary committee will now choose Pakistan’s chief justice, who will serve a set term of three years, as per the judicial reforms approved at a late-night session of parliament. There will also be a new bench for the constitution.
With a few pivotal independent candidates’ votes, the administration secured 225 of the necessary 224 votes. PTI abstained from voting and declined to support the deal.
