According to social media fan film of the performance, Mendes made the remarks prior to singing an unreleased song that appeared to be motivated by his feelings regarding the rumors around his sexual orientation.
The Canadian musician has previously denounced such rumors as being intrusive.
Speaking at Morrison’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Mendes stated that he had “considered for a moment today whether I was going to say something.”
“The truth is that I didn’t get to do a lot of 15-year-old things and discover parts of myself that you do at 15,” he added, receiving applause from the audience.
“I think sexuality is such a beautifully complex thing, and it’s so hard to just put into boxes,” he added, adding that it’s “kind of silly,” that people have been discussing it for so long.
For me, it always seemed like such an infringement on something very private. I was trying to figure out something about myself that I had not yet found and still have not found.
