A federal judge in Los Angeles, California, also sentenced Captain Jerry Boylan to three years of supervised release.
The deadliest maritime accident in modern American history occurred in September 2019 when a fire broke out on the ship Conception.
Boylan was convicted last year on one count of ship officer misconduct or neglect.
Known by the slang term “seaman’s manslaughter,” the charge originated prior to the American Civil War and was meant to hold steamboat captains and crew members responsible for maritime accidents.
Lawyers representing Boylan, who is appealing, submitted the following in a sentencing memo: “While the loss of life here is appalling, there can be no argument that anyone has to die.
