In 2022, the document was found in a dusty old filing cabinet at a historic building in North Carolina.
After representatives from the colonial states convened for the Constitutional Convention and created the document that would serve as the foundation of the US federal government, the copy was printed in 1787.
Only eight such copies are thought to remain in existence, seven of which are owned by the government.
The buyer, who put bids over the phone, was not identified.

The copy of the Constitution was not found until 2022, however a copy of the Declaration of Independence, which was unearthed at the same location, sold for $412,500 in 1983.
George Washington, the future first American president, signed the letter that was sent with the draft Constitution, asking each state to ratify it.
