The human rights commissioner for the Council of Europe, Michael O’Flaherty, expressed his “concern” about the new law and asked that the British government “refrain from removing people under the Rwanda policy.”
“Managing asylum and migration is certainly a complex endeavor for states, but it must always be done in full compliance with international standards,” he said in an interview with the News.
In this sense, I find it troubling that the Rwanda bill permits the adoption of a policy that, in most cases, removes individuals to Rwanda without first allowing UK authorities to evaluate their asylum applications.
