Sen. Mark Kelly, a Democrat from Arizona, has surfaced in a number of rumors as a potential vice presidential candidate for Harris. Harris has come under fire from Republicans for her handling of the situation as the “border czar.”
However, as a senator from a border state, Kelly has a noticeably more moderate record on the subject than Harris, who has a history of making radical remarks about immigration, including requests to slash funds for enforcement.
Kelly has shown a willingness to challenge the Biden administration, even if she generally supports it. Kelly was the only Democratic senator to criticize President Biden in 2021 during his first speech to a joint session of Congress in April for failing to bring up the border situation.
That same year, he advised Biden in a letter to keep building the border wall “where it makes sense.” He specifically indicated a section of Yuma Sector that was frequently used for border crossings. Since then, those holes have been closed.
