But in the upcoming weeks, it might be visible to the unaided eye.
According to Dr. Megan Argo, an astrophysicist at the University of Central Lancashire, it has already experienced multiple bursts of activity.
“If we’re lucky, it may have another in the next few weeks as it passes through the news,” she continued.
The comet, which bears the names of its discoverers, Jean-Louis Pons and William Robert Brooks, resides mostly in the extremely frigid outer regions of the solar system.
It is called a periodic comet because it returns to the inner solar system every 71 years and passes by Earth.
