This time of year, small boat crossings are at an all-time high, and several fatalities have been reported in recent weeks.
The world’s busiest shipping waterway was traversed by 1,500 persons on 27 boats in the week ending July 21, according to UK figures. This translates to an average of 55–56 people per vessel.
Additionally, at the same time period, 1,007 passengers in 33 boats were barred from crossing.
Six boats carrying about 370 individuals crossed on Saturday.
Over 15,000 individuals have crossed this year in total.
The French coastguard reports that they discovered the boat in distress at around 5.30 am, at which point the rescue operation began.
Those on board requested help. When the coastguard arrived at the boat, they discovered someone was unconscious.
After being transferred to the hospital, they were later pronounced dead.
The coastguard reported that multiple people were still on the small boat and were being watched since it was determined that disturbing them would put them in danger of getting hurt or falling into the water, even though 34 people were saved from the boat and one person perished.
