In the 1960s and 1970s, the country was part of the overland “hippy trail” route through Asia, welcoming hundreds of thousands of Western travelers. However, when its complex modern history evolved, the regular stream of visitors ceased.
The UK Foreign Office presently advises against all travel to Afghanistan, citing the country’s “volatile” security situation and an “ongoing and high threat of terrorist attacks.”. But some daring travelers aren’t letting this deter them.
Joan Torres, the founder of the blog and adventure travel company Against the Compass, told News that there has been a “significant increase in demand” for tours of Afghanistan. In 2023, he made three trips to the country, and in 2024, that number will have doubled.
