Matt Dawson, 30, of Australia, suffered a broken digit on his right hand after being hit by a hockey stick during a training session in Perth two weeks ago.
Doctors stated his injuries would take four to six months to heal, thus he would miss this summer’s events in France.
Or, the athlete may have his finger removed and still compete.
Dawson, who plays defence for Australia, picked the latter.
A surgeon removed nearly an inch of the ring finger on his right hand, just below the top knuckle.
He claimed that after discussing the amputation with the doctors, he called his wife, who urged him against making a “rash decision”.
With all of the information I needed to make the decision in a short period of time, I still decided to take it, and I can still live a very normal life with just one fewer finger to think about, Dawson told the Parlez Vous Hockey podcast.
