A stabbing in a German park claimed the lives of a 41-year-old man and a 2-year-old boy.
Following the incident in the Bavarian city of Aschaffenburg, police stated that a 28-year-old Afghan man had been taken into custody.
Officers blocked off the public park after two more people were seriously injured and sent to the hospital.
According to Bavaria’s interior minister Joachim Herrmann, the suspect was freed following psychiatric treatment despite having been arrested at least three times for violent behavior. After his refugee application was denied, he was scheduled to return to Afghanistan.
It occurs weeks before a federal election on February 23 and is the most recent deadly knife assault in Germany in recent months.
Along with other individuals, a kindergarten group was involved in the attack.
