Alfred W. Ruf, an Indiana resident, admitted guilt to aggravated battery with a gross intent and was given a four-year jail sentence in Wayne County Court.
As part of a plea agreement, another charge of conspiring to commit murder was dropped, according to court records.
As per Ruf’s sworn declaration, the 71-year-old confessed to his wife “because he felt bad”.
In 2022, Indiana authorities started looking into the issue after Lisa Bishop, Ruf’s wife, informed them she thought her husband was attempting to kill her after receiving multiple hospital treatments.
She informed authorities that her husband had been sneaking narcotics into her drinks and handed them a pill bottle containing a white, powdery material.
It is said that she got suspicious when she found white powder at the bottom of a Coke can she had consumed.
She denied using drugs until the police brought her to the hospital, where tests revealed she had tested positive for cocaine, MDMA, and the depressant benzodiazepine.
Ruf’s lawyer claimed that the couple’s marriage was unstable, that police were aware of their history of domestic abuse, and that approximately a year prior to Ruf’s arrest, Ms. Bishop had run her husband over with a car.
