According to local media and The Associated Press, the city of Las Cruces, New Mexico, has negotiated a $20 million settlement with the family of a grandmother who was shot dead by a police officer last year.
In October 2023, Teresa Gomez, 45, was shot and killed in her vehicle by Felipe Hernandez, who was then employed by the Las Cruces Police Department. The city, the police chief, and three police officers were sued by her family in federal court.
According to news outlet KFOX14, the settlement is the biggest civil lawsuit settlement in the city. The court document states that the parties negotiated a settlement on November 7. The city and a lawyer for the Gomez family have been contacted by news for comment.
