Just a few days prior to the poll, the picture of Basumatary surrounded by money stacks went viral, drawing criticism from all corners and casting doubt on the moral character of public leaders.
In a prompt statement, the UPPL attempted to disassociate itself from the controversy by highlighting the fact that Basumatary had been expelled from the party on January 10, 2024.
In a statement outlining the party’s position, UPPL leader Pramod Boro said, “Mr. Basumatary’s association with UPPL stopped on January 10, 2024, following his suspension.
After he received a letter from the Harisingha Block Committee on January 5, 2024, the party decided to discipline him. In addition, on February 10, 2024, the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Government dismissed him of his responsibilities as VCDC Chairman.”
Boro reaffirmed the party’s stance against corruption and its dedication to openness and honesty. He emphasized that Basumatary is entirely responsible for his conduct and asked the public and media to avoid linking them to the party.
