Gillian Keegan was questioned about the issue as Tory MPs attempted to remove the government’s Criminal Justice Bill, which is slowly making its way through parliament, from its ability to hold someone based just on their smell.
According to the law, “excessive smells” are one type of “damage” that warrants an order to be made.
Although Ms. Keegan told News she disagreed with the measure’s outlined principles, the administration has not stated if it supports amending the bill.
Ms. Keegan responded, “Well, no, people should not be arrested just because they smell,” when asked if someone should be arrested if they smell.
The education secretary claimed she had not “looked at the detail of it” when asked why the clause had been included in the bill.
