A reaction has been directed at Sir Lindsay Hoyle for permitting a vote on a Labour amendment to an SNP resolution that demanded an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
According to parliamentary tradition, an opposition motion would typically only get a government amendment; nevertheless, Sir Lindsay stated that he chose the Labour amendment to facilitate the widest possible discussion.
Critics within the SNP and the Conservatives, however, assert that he gave in to pressure from the Labour Party to choose the amendment in order to avert a possible revolt among its MPs, who might have supported the SNP motion if given the chance to vote independently.
