Over the weekend, the temperature in San Francisco reached a scorching 47C (117F), while in Las Vegas, it peaked at 46C, the most since 2007.
The extreme heat advisory for a large portion of the southwest has been extended, according to the National Weather Service.
The office in Las Vegas stated: “A dangerous and historic heatwave is just getting started across the area, with temperatures expected to peak during the Sunday-Wednesday timeframe.”
It was predicted that temperatures will rise above 38C (100F) even in the more temperate regions of the nation, such as the northeast, mid-Atlantic, and Pacific Northwest.
Expectations are also for more dramatic highs.
Although some scientists contest the measurement and claim the true record was 54.4 °C, reached there in July 2021, the highest temperature ever officially recorded on Earth was 56.67 °C (134 °F) in Death Valley in July 1913.
More heat waves are anticipated in the eastern United States as well.
A warning of excessive heat was in effect for Baltimore and other regions of Maryland, with temperatures expected to reach 43C (110F).
