As a technology trial is conducted in Cornwall, scientists expect that robots will enable farmers to more swiftly evaluate the condition of the soil.
The soil quality is being evaluated using a gamma ray detector using a gadget created by a Cornish business.
Tenant farmer Malcolm Barrett of St Tudy, close to Bodmin, is collaborating with University of Plymouth academics to map the condition of the soil in his fields using a gamma ray detector attached to a robot.
He expressed his optimism that the technology, which was superior to traditional analysis in terms of speed and quality, would increase agricultural profitability.
