The 26th Constitutional Amendment, which requires the top judicial position to be filled three days prior to the incumbent’s retirement, has prompted the coalition government to begin the process of selecting a new top court judge in anticipation of incumbent Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa’s October 25 retirement.
The National Assembly Secretariat announced late Monday that a 12-member Special Parliamentary Committee had been established to select the next Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP).
Eight lawmakers from the Treasury and four from the opposition benches make up the 12-member committee:
Khawaja Asif, MNA (PML-N)
Ahsan Iqbal, MNA (PML-N)
MNA Pervaiz Shaista (PML-N)
Pervaiz Ashraf, MNA (PPP)
PPP MNA Syed Naveed Qamar
Rana Ansar, MNA (MQM-P)
