While there have been several well-known internet cats, it’s probable that none have caused as much grief as Chubby. Chubby is shown in a variety of ways, but he is always fat, ginger, and created by AI. He’s virtually always involved in something strange or really depressing. And millions of people have been won over, confused, and enraged by him.
Via wordless slideshows of AI-generated images, content makers on TikTok and YouTube Shorts narrate stories about Chubby and his family. The TikTok account @mpminds recently posted a video in which Chubby and his younger brother, Chubby Jr., are shown in rags.
“AI picture generators are known for their poor text rendering abilities, despite their ability to produce stunning visuals. The following photos show Chubby robbing a grocery store, being taken into custody by the police, and leaving Chubby Jr. shaken and uncertain about the future. The final picture depicts Chubby yearning to see his son while incarcerated. More than 50 million people have viewed the film, and 68,000 comments in multiple languages have been left.
Chubby is not alone. In recent months, social media has been overrun with similar garbage. Reports surfaced in March of strange AI-generated pictures of Jesus made of shrimp that went viral on Facebook, confusing onlookers and receiving millions of views. The posts gained so much traction that many conjectured about the social media interaction
