Divergent accounts of a purported rape at a Lahore private college have provoked large-scale student demonstrations. Police assert that the alleged crime is still unreported and that neither the accused victim nor her family have contacted them, despite the fact that students have organized protests and called for a boycott of courses.
Police detained the suspect in response to unverified social media claims that a security guard had been involved in the rape. According to DIG Operations Faisal Kamran, neither the accused victim nor her family has been in touch with the police, and no formal report has been submitted to the college administration, the appropriate police station, or the 15 helpline.
After protesting outside the Gulberg campus, security guards tried to lock down the gates and classrooms, which sparked altercations with the students. Students responded by smashing CCTV cameras and damaging property.
