LAHORE: In light of the current cold wave that is engulfing the province, caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi said on Wednesday that lessons for students in grade one and below will stay postponed for one week.
36 children in the province have died from pneumonia, Naqvi said at an emergency meeting at the Children’s Hospital in Lahore. As a result, the government has decided to postpone exams for classes 1 through 10.
“Pneumonia affects eight out of ten children,” stated the chief minister, who also ordered the schools to do away with the morning assembly routine.
He went on to say, “A child who has pneumonia should not be allowed to attend school,” advocating for vaccinations against the illness for both young people and the elderly.
This development coincides with the province-wide reopening of schools this Wednesday, December 18, 2023, following their winter break.
The provincial administration announced a change in the start time of the schools on Monday. As of January 10 through January 22, the schools will begin at 9:30 am.
The Punjab School Education Department this week extended the winter break for public and private educational institutions till January 9 due to the ongoing cold weather.
