When a guy attacked a Japanese woman and her child at a bus stop outside a Japanese school, Hu Youping was employed as a school bus attendant in Suzhou City.
She was trying to control him when she got major injuries.
Online tributes to her have been overwhelming, and the local administration said that she will be named a “righteous and courageous role model.”
In observance of Ms. Hu, the Japanese embassy in China also flew its flag at half mast. The embassy expressed on Weibo that it was “saddened” by her passing.
We think that [Ms. Hu’s] generosity and bravery also speak for the Chinese people. We give thanks for her good deeds. It said, May she rest in peace.
On Chinese social media, there was an abundance of praise and condolence posts.
You safeguarded our Japanese friends’ safety and upheld the reputation of common Chinese people, thus we will never forget your bravery and kindness—read a Weibo comment.
A different person called Ms. Hu a “ordinary, virtuous, courageous Chinese sister”.
The incident on Monday left the mother and boy with injuries, but nothing life-threatening. A 52-year-old Chinese guy was apprehended at the site as the suspect.
It came after another stabbing in a Jilin park earlier this month that left four US university lecturers hurt.
