The Local Government Association (LGA) released its results as it urges the UK government to do more to safeguard local politicians, including council members.
73% of respondents to the LGA survey reported having been the victim of abuse or intimidation in the previous 12 months.
Additionally, 49% of respondents claimed that throughout the past year, abuse had gotten worse.
Twenty-two percent of the 1,734 respondents, or 10% of all council members in England and Wales, reported having been threatened with violence while serving in their position.
Approximately 23% of respondents, or 5% of all local officials, reported receiving a death threat.
Nonetheless, fewer council members (73%), compared to 82% last year, reported feeling threatened in the previous year.
As the national association of local authorities, the LGA supports, advances, and enhances local government on behalf of its member councils.
It demands that the UK government implement measures to protect local politicians, such as letting them refrain from disclosing their residential addresses.
