According to the trade group, there was a 50% increase in violence and abuse against shop workers last year, with almost 1,300 instances each day, up from 870 the year before.
Of the total, about 8,800 led to injuries throughout the course of the year.
A variety of occurrences, including as physical aggression, threats with weapons, racial abuse, and sexual harassment, were experienced by retail staff.
Abuse and shoplifting are closely related; in November, it was claimed that up to 25% of staff experienced mistreatment and reported being hit, spit on, or yelled at, especially when addressing the offenders.
