As the future of Chinese-owned TikTok in the US is still up in the air, Instagram is apparently thinking about releasing its short-form video feature, Reels, as a stand-alone app.
According to a person who heard the comments, The Information, a business publication that focuses on the technology sector, said that Adam Mosseri, the boss of the social networking platform, informed employees about the possible transfer this week.
A BBC request for comment was not immediately answered by Instagram’s parent company, Meta.
TikTok was given a 75-day extension by US President Donald Trump in January to comply with a rule signed by then-President Joe Biden that mandates the platform be sold or banned.
