The UN Human Rights Office has denounced the high death toll from the war in Gaza, stating that women and children accounted for nearly 70% of confirmed deaths over a six-month period.
According to the agency, the high number was mostly caused by Israel’s employment of weapons with wide-area impacts in locations with a high population density, however some casualties might have been caused by Palestinian armed organizations’ misdirected rockets.
The investigation raised concerns about “war crimes and other possible atrocity crimes” after discovering “unprecedented” levels of violations of international law.
Israel has previously stated that it targets Hamas and uses targeted weapons to reduce the risk to civilians.
