Due to security concerns in Afghanistan, which is destroyed by violence, work on the TAPI pipeline, which passes through Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, has been put on hold several times.
Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban administration, declared during the event that “from today the operations will start on Afghanistan’s soil.” His remarks were carried by Afghan state media.
Hassan Akhund, the prime minister of Afghanistan, and other authorities from both sides praised the initiative at the border ceremony in Islim Cheshma, Turkmenistan.
“This project will benefit not only the economies of the participating countries, but the countries of the whole region,” President Serdar Berdimuhamedow of Turkmenistan stated during the ceremony via a live video feed.
A public holiday was announced to commemorate the event in the Afghan border region of Herat, where posters promoting the project were widely displayed.
