SHANGHAI: After video of a client peeing into a simmering hotpot went viral online and sparked a public outcry, one of China’s largest restaurant chains pledged to reimburse hundreds of patrons.
The video, which was shot last month, seemed to show a young man standing on a table at a Shanghai Haidilao location peeing into a boiling broth vat.
Social media users immediately reacted negatively to the video, expressing their disgust and rage at the egregious violation of food safety at one of the most well-known restaurant brands in the nation.
In a social media post on Wednesday, Haidilao acknowledged the occurrence and expressed its “extremely sorry” while stating that it was taking legal action.
