The news agency’s safety advisor, Ryan Evans, was discovered dead on Sunday beneath the debris of the Hotel Sapphire in Kramatorsk, an eastern city under Ukrainian control that is close to the front line.
Russian military reportedly attacked the hotel in the eastern Donetsk region, according to Ukrainian authorities. Russia has not yet provided a statement.
“We are devastated to learn that Reuters safety advisor Ryan Evans, who was with our reporting team in Ukraine, has been killed,” Reuters said in a statement.
On Saturday, August 24, 2024, a missile strike struck the Hotel Sapphire in Kramatorsk, eastern Ukraine, where Ryan was a member of a Reuters team.
“We have two of our journalists hospitalized; one is receiving treatment for severe wounds. There are three more coworkers who are safe and accounted for.
“We are supporting our colleagues and their families and are actively looking for additional information about the attack, including by collaborating with the Kramatorsk authorities.”
