DAMASCUS, NEW YORK: Following significant unrest, Syrian rebels are attempting to establish a government and bring order back to the country after quickly overthrowing now-former president Bashar al-Assad and leaving the region and the globe uneasy.
Diplomats said they were still in disbelief at how swiftly Assad’s removal transpired during a 12-day period following a 13-year civil war that had been at a standstill for years. The UN Security Council met behind closed doors late Monday.
“Everyone, even the council members, was caught off guard. Therefore, we must wait, observe, and assess the situation as it unfolds,” Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia told reporters following the meeting.
